As one of the most iconic musical instruments of all time, the banjo remains a favourite amongst many musicians, thanks in no small part to its recognisable and distinct sound as well as its unique look. In fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t find the jolly twang of a finger picked banjo enjoyable if not appealing. To this end, here are just a few reasons why you should learn how to play the banjo.
- You get to play one of the greatest songs of all time
Perhaps one of the best reasons why you should learn the banjo is that you’ll be able to play dueling banjos which is arguably the best banjo piece of all time and one of the greatest instrumental compositions ever made. Originally composed by American songwriter and musician, Arthur Smith (also known as “Guitar Boogie”), in the mid-50s, the piece garnered popularity when it was featured in a film called Deliverance. Since then, Dueling Banjos has become a standard among many banjo players and continues to be played to this day.
- Affordable and inexpensive
When it comes to music, the one element that can potentially deter many of us from pursuing our passion is cost. It’s a great hobby to take up for any lifestyle. From the price of the instruments to the lessons from instructors, the expenditure that it entails can often be difficult to afford for those working with a limited budget. The banjo, however, is different. Compared to its other string counterparts, it’s relatively affordable and inexpensive to own which makes it a viable alternative for those who have no more than a modest budget to work with.
- It is relatively easy and straightforward to learn
Another factor that plays a role in the pursuit of learning music is the difficulty that it presents. While no instrument will ever be without its fair share of challenges, some may require a lot more time than many of us can afford to invest. With all the responsibilities and tasks that we have to deal with on a daily basis, it makes sense to choose an instrument like the banjo that is a lot simpler to learn and play. After all, there’s hardly any point in learning an instrument if we can ill-afford to put in the time that it needs for us to be competent at it.
- The banjo can accompany other instruments
You’ll be happy to know that while the banjo can be played alone, it also lends itself to being accompanied by other musical instruments. From guitars to violins, the banjo will never be out of place whether it’s with other instruments or on its own.
While our preference in music will ultimately determine the instrument that we choose to play, learning the banjo boasts many advantages that other alternatives lack. From the affordable price of the instruments themselves to the sheer amount of reference materials available, not only will you have a relatively easy time playing the banjo, but you won’t have to spend a small fortune doing so.
